This week’s blog is an attempt to do a quick analysis and redesign the ESPN mobile app. Here I will include images of the current ESPN app and compare my design.

Wireframes designed using Adobe XD. I tried my best to imitate the original design but certain portions are a little different.

I decided to make these adjustments based on features I had problems with while using the app.

I’ve been using EPSN+ for a while now. The main reason I got ESPN+ is cause I am a huge soccer fan. My favorite team is Arsenal and I love to watch non-Arsenal games also when I have the opportunity. I usually watch The Premier League, Champions League, and La Liga through Sling. I also wanted to follow up on the Euro 2020 which is now postponed to 2021 due to COVID-19, and other European Cup games. The only way I could get access to these games was through ESPN+ so I caved in and got it. For the most part, I love the app but experienced a little inconvenience using it.

My first time using the app about a year ago. It asked for favorite sports competitions to filter content based on my preference. Despite this, whenever I log in the first content I see is never content among my favorites. And this happens when my favorite games are live also. The images below are that of the current app.

As you can see on the home screen the top stories are ahead of the soccer games I’m interested in. The top stories on the home screen is a good idea. But for soccer lovers like myself, the first thing I want to see on a game day is updates. While the app does give updates users have to scroll down a little to see them. In my design, I moved the live game update up and the top stories below where users can see them. “Above the fold” is one of the principles of design because it’s what users see when they open a site or app. Users’ favorites competition should be above the fold. This eliminates the need for users to scrolling down to get updates.

The second subject is the scores/result screen. I like this because it shows games currently running and upcoming games also. The only drawback I have with this is that it shows games that were played a couple of months ago. It shows the last results in said competitions since games were last played. While this is a good idea, users have the ability to filter based on competitions and see said results. Hence, this is distracting so I took them out and kept the current and upcoming games.

All in all, the app is very good and the UI is terrific. Nonetheless, these few tweaks will definitely make for a better experience for users.
